Whenever I read or write,
letter shapes, word sounds
echo in silence to enchant me.
Take H and I
side by side in the alphabet
H builds a bridge between two I's
I stands alone.
The I within me - insecure
found life impossible
outside my world of words.
I lived there so long
I lost my self
Years ago at Yahara,
words from others
embraced the self within.
Letters spelled out
affirmation, assurance
kept among my treasures to remind me
You are loved.
You are a person of worth.
You are a writer.
I learned to focus on Helpful, Healing words
stepped outside into a world of Hope.
hunger for praise became Humility -
I discovered the letter G.
G reaches from inside out to begin a circle
leaving room for others to enter.
G always comes first -- G H I
with it echo the words

Tommie Lenox -- educator, author and videographer -- has a heart for children at risk. While still a work-in-progress, her book -- Crying in the Wilderness: a Voice for America's Children -- won awards two different years at the Maui Writers' Conference. Following publication in 2008, the book received an IPPY award, for excellence in independent publishing. In 2001, she was awarded the Communicator of the Year Award of Distinction as script/project coordinator for Beyond Send, People Packets and Pandas, a film she did in collaboration with the San Diego County Office of Education.
